Paleontology: No supersonic boom for dinosaur tails

Diplodocids—large herbivorous dinosaurs with long necks and tails—may have been able to move their tails like bullwhips at speeds of up to 33 meters per second (more than 100 kilometers per hour), according to a modeling study published in Scientific Reports. However, these findings contradict those of a previous study, which proposed that a hypothetical structure attached to the end of a diplodocid tail—similar to a tuft at the end of a bullwhip—could move faster than the speed of sound (340 meters per second) and create a small supersonic boom.

Transocean (NYSE:RIG) stock is rising on Thursday after announcing new contract awards from a national oil company.

These new contracts include its ultra-deepwater drillships, Deepwater Corcovado and Deepwater Orion. The contracts will have them working offshore Brazil. Deepwater Corcovado was signed for a four-year contract and Deepwater Orion for a three-year contract.

The total amount of backlog for the two contracts sits at $1.04 billion. That includes $583 million in backlog from Deepwater Corcovado and $456 million in backlog from Deepwater Orion. The Deepwater Corcovado starts in Q3 2023 and the Deepwater Orion starts in Q4 2023.

How This Affects RIG Stock

Investors are celebrating today’s news as it lines the company up with work for the next four years. This likely has them hopeful that Transocean’s earnings report will reflect these new contracts once service starts.

As for RIG stock movement today, some 11 million shares have changed hands as of this writing. That’s still a ways off from the offshore contract drilling services company’s <div class=”tradingview-widget-container”>  <div class=”tradingview-widget-container__widget”></div>  <div class=”tradingview-widget-copyright”><a href=”https://www.tradingview.com/symbols/NASDAQ-SOUN/” rel=”noopener” target=”_blank”><span class=”blue-text”>SOUN Quotes</span></a> by TradingView</div>  <script type=”text/javascript” src=”https://s3.tradingview.com/external-embedding/embed-widget-mini-symbol-overview.js” async>  {  “symbol”: “NASDAQ:SOUN”,  “width”: “100%”,  “height”: “100%”,  “locale”: “en”,  “dateRange”: “12M”,  “colorTheme”: “dark”,  “trendLineColor”: “rgba(0, 0, 255, 1)”,  “underLineColor”: “rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.3)”,  “underLineBottomColor”:…’ class=”encyclopedia”>daily average trading volume of 25.9 million shares.

RIG stock is up 7% as of Thursday morning and is 25.8% since the start of the year.

AMC Entertainment (AMC) Stock Rebounds Amid Bankruptcy Fears

Shares in AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC) stock fell 10% on Dec. 7 but regained some of the loss overnight on fears of a possible bankruptcy and restructuring.

AMC stock opened today at $6.25 and, as of this writing, sits up in the green by about 6%. More ominously, the preferred shares, designated as APE (NYSE:APE), opened at just 83 cents.

Fall of the Planet of the APEs

AMC CEO Adam Aron rode an early 2021 short squeeze that made AMC a meme stock for as long and hard as he could. The APE shares were named for the small traders, or APEs, who supported the stock to its high of nearly $60/share in June 2021. Aron later began supporting cryptocurrency and NFTs to keep up investor interest.

But the realities of a bear market are irresistible. AMC’s most recent quarterly report saw a loss of $227 million on revenue of $969 million. The company burned through $179 million in cash and ended the period with $896 million in liquidity, including available loan capacity.

AMC also ended the period with $9.5 billion in long-term debt. Those creditors are now reportedly organizing, preparing for the worst. Before Covid-19, AMC was regularly delivering over $500 million in operating cash flow each year, from about $5.5 billion in annual revenue. Now revenue is down 20% and there seems to be no end in sight to the losses.

As Aron himself said last month, there just aren’t enough movies. He insists 2023 will be better, with popular franchises dropping new releases and Harrison Ford debuting his final turn as Indiana Jones.

But investors won’t be able to enjoy the premieres unless the industry does some drastic surgery. AMC rival Cineworld Group, which owns Regal Theaters, filed for bankruptcy in September. The fear now is that AMC will be next.

AMC Stock: What Happens Next?

It’s an important lesson for small traders. If you’re to be involved in something like a short squeeze, you need to sell before fundamentals catch up to you.

Selling is the hardest thing for any investor to do. Even the best can fail the test, unable to figure out else to put the money we’re taking out. But until you learn the discipline you will remain an APE, and the end of every story will be Chapter 11.

Pharvaris (NASDAQ:PHVS) stock is heading higher on Thursday following the release of positive results from a Phase 2 clinical study.

That clinical trial covers PHVS416, which is an oral treatment for hereditary angioedema (HAE) attacks. The treatment is for patients suffering from Type I or Type II HAE. This study included 74 patients randomized into single-dose groups of PHVS416 or placebo.

The primary endpoint of the study is change on the three-symptom composite visual analogue scale. Data from 147 attacks suffered by 62 patients shows PHVS416 significantly reduces attack symptoms.

In addition to this, the study also met all of its secondary endpoints. That includes shortening the time of onset symptom relief, decreasing the time in score reduction, reducing the time of complete symptom relief, reducing mean symptom complex severity, and improving treatment outcome score.

What’s Next for PHVS Stock?

Investors are likely hoping for more gains as Pharvaris continues the development of PHVS416. It plans to keep clinical trials in other countries ongoing even as a hold is in place in the U.S. It also intends to reveal more details about the study from future medical meetings.

With today’s news comes heavy trading of PHVS stock. As of this writing, more than 27 million shares of the stock have changed hands. New genomes to help protect Britain’s wild and ancient apples

The full genetic codes for Britain’s only native wild apple, the European crab-apple, Malus sylvestris, and four heritage edible apple varieties have been sequenced by scientists. Together, these top-quality genome assemblies will allow researchers to better understand our apple heritage and will help prevent our wild apples being hybridized out of existence by their domestic relatives.
